Update on Venmo Goods and Services
If you saw my earlier posts about paying with venmo goods and services, I now have an update on the dispute…
A little back story: I bought an item on here using Venmo goods and services. The guy ended up being a scammer, in fact he blocked me on here before I could even send him my address. So, I disputed the charges immediately. Well, unlike PayPal G&S, venmo G&S still gives the seller the money immediately. PayPal on the other hand holds the money until the item arrives. So, I wasn’t confident I’d get my money back…
Anyway, I disputed it, venmo told me it would take 10 days, after 30+ days I finally got an email from venmo saying they DENIED my dispute and I wasn’t going to get my money back.
My last post left off there. However, after posting I made a call to Venmo, spent hours on the phone with one supervisor after another. Eventually I found out that the Goods and Services account representative who oversaw my case had just denied it without ever investigating. He made no notes in the internals case logs. Nothing. Just denied it. The supervisor I spoke to apologized, said their G&S department is very new and basically that the rep was in the wrong. He re-filed the dispute for me and sent it to a different account rep.
After about another week, finally, I got an email yesterday saying I had been refunded.
So, here is what I learned:
-Venmo G&S is very new and they are working out some kinks, I would assume that they’ll learn quickly that they need to hold the money and verify an item was received before releasing the money, or, they’re gonna be losing money paying back buyers out of pocket like they did in my case!
-Venmo G&S is NOT only for business accounts now. As of July 2021 the feature is available for all person to person transactions when the selection box/toggle is available to be pressed!
-The dispute process is VERY long. Much longer than PayPal’s. They clearly have trouble finding honest and thorough employees. So, if your dispute is denied, press on. Make calls, etc.
In conclusion, I did eventually get my money back. They claim the original denial was due to a bad employee not doing his job. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn they actually deny claims on purpose as they aren’t properly protecting the money or themselves from scammers. By giving the seller the money for withdrawal immediately, they aren’t giving enough time to verify the item has arrived. So, because venmo isn’t holding the money, that means when a scam is reported, they have clear motivation to deny your claim… because if they approve the claim, they are the ones paying you back the money! Which no business is wanting to do. Sure, they can go after the scammer to try to get the money back. Try to use collection agency’s, or whatever. But, since venmo accounts don’t require your social security number, that’s gonna be more difficult.
So, use venmo G&S at your own risk. It is NOT as safe as PayPal. But, you CAN use it for person to person sales. So, like everything on the internet, be careful. Make sure the seller is reputable by asking for extra photos, videos, photos with written time/date/your name in them. Check a sellers vouches. Do all the normal things still.
Hope this info helps!
