Unpopular opinion: the problem isn’t the app, it’s the community
TLDR: We need to support the needs of the airsoft B/S/T community and additional features would help.
I’ve been playing airsoft for over 10 years, and on Hopup for B/S/T for about 3 years. Over the past 3 years, I’ve seen the posts on here degrade rapidly.
The constant lowball offers, trade offers, and toxic comments aren’t helping anyone. Don’t get me started on the listings that say “Testing waters” or “make an offer” or “trade only” with sell prices listed as $9999 or $1234. You wouldn’t list something on eBay for a fake price, would you? Do some market research before listing an item.
In the spirit of moving forward and making this app a more favorable platform for serious hobbyists, I think the following features would benefit the community:
- Payment method/age verification: several states require the purchaser of an airsoft replica to be of a certain age. Several age verification plugins exist to easily add to web apps. Verifying payment methods ensures the person making the purchase is authorized to do so (and isn’t relying on a parent or legal guardian).
- Price limits: I’m well aware some custom builds or bundles are worth over $1000, but setting a payment threshold will help limit spam. Perhaps introduce a “Supplier Verification” process for stores selling bulk items or high price tag items to ensure they are legit.
- Minimum description requirement: it’s painful seeing “Custom hi-Capa - $1400” with no parts list. Possibly add a Stock/Custom option with a mandatory description where people can enter the parts associated with a custom build.
Honestly, it’s frustrating using this app for side income when so much spam and garbage gets through. I struggle to sell a $200 item due to the amount of low offers sent without any description or reasoning. I’ve sold $600 items here and talk through/share visual details in length. The same process all high ticket sales for used goods should follow.
At the end of the day, hopup users, share your thoughts. What would make this app better for the way you use it? How can we as the community help try to make it better? Hopup team: will you be mindful of the feedback here?
