Task Force Robbie (TFR), a 3rd Marine Division Reserve mobile task force, was established in February 1968 to assist the 3rd Mar Division and III MAF units to counter the NVA Tet Offensive in the I Corps area. TF Robbie, named after its founder, Colonel Clifford Robichaud, USMC, was a multi-branch Quick Reactionary Force (QRF) consisting of USMC, US NAVY and US ARMY assets. Listed below are the units that personelle were drawn from according to historical journals & documents made available by Bruce M. Mac Laren, Col. USMC (Ret) and Richard H. Smiley, Ph.D. who was a platoon leader in B Battery, 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, US ARMY.
We thank these men, and all that serve, for their dedication & selfless scarifies that allow us all to be free.
Colonel Clifford Robichaud, Colonel James Stockman, G-3, Lt. Col. Fred Chapman, Lt. Col Harvey, and Lt. Col. Karl Fontenot (CO, 3rd Tank Battalion) put together a staff to operate the new mobile task force-Task Force Robbie as follows:
CO Col Clifford Robichaud XO LtCol Karl Fontenot S-1 1st Sergeant Richard Kawanis
S-2 GySgt Carl W. Keegan S-3 Major Bruce M. Mac Laren

The 27th Independent Battalion (27th IB) NVA, along with local Viet Cong were the first identifiable enemy outfit to be an adversary from day 1 of the TFR establishment.
The command element of TFR were never very sure as to that unit’s strength, but as soldiers, the 27th IB in particular, blended well with the bush and acted aggressively against TFR during periods of defensive inattention. The 27th IB cadre had close ties with the villages including Cam Vu adjacent to FOP C-3 manned primarily by recon teams from 3rd Recon & ST-2. It was found that unlike the Viet Cong, the 27thIB did NOT collect “taxes” from the civilians or wear proper NVA uniforms, which created problems for TFR as well as themselves in the event of their capture. IDing their KIAs revealed mostly standard Vietnamese civilian attire, but also unlike the VC, they appeared to be more physically fit. Based on what little solid intel G-2 was able to pass to TFR, the CO of the 27th IB was named “Ho”. He was a North Vietnamese Catholic, and he was a graduate of the University of Hue. This was all the info that TFR had at the time. Later, reports came in referring to NVA 320 Division and NVA 324 B Division. These were uniformed soldiers en route south skirting the perimeters to the west in places like Dai Do and Dong Ha.
